The Shores of Australia

-The Shores of Australia -
Sea, sea, iron-black sea,
You took all the children away with thee,
In ships tall as buildings and deep as the night,
You bore them away on your arms.
Did you rock them all gently and sing them to sleep,
And tell them we’d write to them soon?
Did you carry them safe all those miles so far,
From here to the shores of Australia?
Sea, sea, flint-black sea,
Where are the children you took with thee?
How long has it been now since they went away,
Silently borne on your arms?
So many letters we’ve written and sent,
The children, they never reply,
Oh Sea, won’t you please, won’t you please, won’t you please…
Bring them home from the shores of Australia…
- - -
Well now, let me see…
The children you say that I took with me?
Was it not that you gave them and sent them away,
So far away from their homes?
I rocked them all gently, I sang them to sleep,
I saw that they came to no harm,
And I carried them safe all the miles so far,
From your arms to the shores of Australia.
But the nuns took you children and hid them away,
They told them: ‘now you are alone;
Your families have all of them died in their sleep
And you will not ever go home.’
The letters you wrote them were burned every one,
The children heard never a word from you,
In truth, they were orphans the moment they stepped,
Onto the shores of Australia.

All Down Through the Years
The Skylarks were courting up there on the heath
And the cherry tree blossomed whilst we kissed beneath.
The roses were budding all around by your door,
The day that I left you and went to the war.
All down through the days, Dear, wherever I roam,
Will you still love me, when I return home?
Do say that you will, Dear, do please let me know,
For I shall be safe then wherever I go.
The boys they were cheering as we sailed away
And after we landed they sang all the way.
Mile followed mile, but they sang every one,
‘Til the sound of their singing was drowned by the guns.
All down through the weeks, Dear, wherever I roam,
Will you still love me, when I return home?
Do say that you will, Dear, do please let me know,
For I shall be safe then wherever I go.
It seems like forever since we came out here
And every day since then has felt like a year.
There’s nobody left now to sing all those songs,
The boys that I sailed with are, most of them, gone.
All down through the months, Dear, wherever I roam,
Will you still love me, when I return home?
Do say that you will, Dear, do please let me know,
For I shall be safe then, wherever I go.
I can’t stick the nights here, the cold and the fear,
How I wish I was back home and holding you near.
When I’m sleeping I dream that I’m back there once more,
With you for always away from the war.
All down through the years, Dear, wherever I roam,
Will you still love me, when I return home?
Do say that you will, Dear do please let me know,
For I shall be safe then, wherever I go.

These Blue Bloodied Skies
Smoky fell the angels few,
Broken and in flames.
White weals coiled
In swollen welts,
In these blue bloodied skies.
Above these hills so rolling green,
Above these dark knapped waves,
White weals coiled
In swollen welts,
In these blue bloodied skies...
